Jaws’ Breakfast

It’s that magical time of year again, Shark Week! I look forward to it every year and Alice has grudgingly learned to appreciate its silly amusement for me. Last year, we did our first Shark Week cocktail, the Blue Hawaiian Shark Attack. Keeping up with that theme, this year we debut Jaws’ Breakfast!

Remarkably, it’s the 40th anniversary of “Jaws.” I think it’s safe to say that we’ve all seen it by now, but if you haven’t I’m going to spoil the opening scene of the movie for you. So unless you want to be spoiled, and have honestly missed out this entire time, look away now. Go ahead, skip down to the recipe instead. OK?

SPOILER WARNING.

Jaws (well, Bruce, but that’s just a nice shark from “Finding Nemo,” so let’s stick with Jaws as the name) eats a girl!

Bum bum bum!

That’s the inspiration for this drink. That and the classic cocktail of the White Lady — except we pretty much changed everything about that. Still, that’s how we came up with the name Jaws’ Breakfast, he eats a girl to start the movie.

The first, and some might say most important, thing we changed was going from gin to tequila.

It was just a matter of determining what tequila would go with the citrus — but decidedly non-lime — notes of this drink. Realizing the decided non-lime-ness made our choice pretty easy. Our buddies over at Sauza 901 hooked us up with some of their tequila under the express agreement that we make a cocktail sans lime.

Consider this payment in lime-free-full.

Instead of lime, we have Grand Marnier, some lemon juice, blue curacao and orange bitters. Yeah, we really hit the orange hard; but don’t worry tequila fans, the tequila still shines here.

The final piece of flair that the drink needed: shark fin ice cubes.

BOOM!

Like I said, with Martha selling her company, we’ll support your crafty cocktail needs.

Lastly, but not leastly (a word), we decided that as Shark Week always happens in the summer and immediately takes you to the beach, it was a great time for us to usher in our first blended drink.

So get ready to get your shark action on with Jaws’ Breakfast!
