Amaro Lucano Punch

I’m not sure about you, but I’ll take any excuse I can to have a relaxing drink outside when the weather is pleasing. Heck, I remember when my Danish relatives visited me in college (go Poly!) and they insisted on spending basically every minute they could outside — though I suppose central California is a touch more temperate than the Frozen North that is Denmark outside of summer. Great cocktails for outside gatherings? Punches. Make one or make a pitcher and you’re set. Here’s a winner for your next outdoor gathering, the Amaro Lucano Punch!

amaro lucano

What is Amaro Lucano? It’s amaro, der. Not sure what that is? It’s an Italian (typically after dinner) slightly bitter digestif. They brew it with special herbs and spices, don’t fry it, but turn it into a tasty little drink that you can (Alice wouldn’t, but I might) drink on the rocks after you’re done eating.

However, when I had a taste, the immediate thing that popped into my mind was PUNCH. I’m relatively sure it wasn’t because I was just playing an emulated version of Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! (a perennial classic, I challenge you not to love it), but because Amaro Lucano really lends itself to a punch.

add white grape juice

add ice and shake

Much like with Crème de Cacao, what I don’t like is a totally sweet, one-noted punch. That’s just not interesting to drink. Don’t get me wrong, what I’m not saying is that I want something super complex where you need to consider every sip closely, that’s just not relaxing.

What you want, in my estimation, is a refreshing, tastes good with food, will easily get you happy (and happier the more you drink), looks a little fun, could definitely work in a punch bowl, punch. That’s not too much to ask is it?

I think not.

Ready to get out there, soak up some sun, enjoy the great outdoors (even if only your backyard) and have a tasty punch while doing it? I know I am.

Notes
You can indeed (and I'm not going to say you should, but you probably should) upsize this bad boy to your heart's content. If you want to go with a serving for six: 6 oz. Amaro Lucano, 3 oz. peach brandy, 3 oz. Cointreau, 1½ oz. Chambord, 1½ oz. lemon juice, 1½ oz. honey water, 18 oz. white grape juice. Add all of that to your favorite punch bowl (that holds at least 35 oz.) along with your berries and orange slices (gotta make it look sexy). Then chill it out in a fridge. Then ladle into your favorite mugs, glasses or just down the hatch. (Don't add ice to it, add that to your glasses -- you don't want to water this down!) Now go enjoy the great outside.
