Rum Sidecar
I’ve been enjoying all of the fruit based cocktails we’ve been doing lately. It’s summer and you gotta do what’s in season, right? I know that’s what we usually try to do. However, I do get to a point where I don’t want to go to the farmer’s market to get my cocktail fixings, but I still want something pleasant and not too heavy. I mean, it is hot out, so something with some citrus kick, with some fun, with joy, with some pirate action, but still classic flavors is in order. An upgraded Sidecar, but with a Venezuelan kick — let’s have a Rum Sidecar!
With your classic Sidecar, you have cognac, which is fine and dandy, I enjoy it (especially in a Grasshopper), but during summer you want something a little more summery. Something that should make you, at the very least, feel the urge to hop on your ship and sail the Caribbean in search of booty!
Yes, that’s an unabashed Pirates of the Caribbean reference. And do you know what pirates drink? Rum.
Which led me to the logical conclusion of summer-ifying the Sidecar with rum, obviously. As to which rum? Well, our friends over Ron Diplomático hooked us up with their Rum Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva and I knew it’d be the perfect replacement for the cognac.
Since we were fiddling with the recipe anyway (some might say improving it, but certainly making it extra pirate approved), I decided we’d ditch the Grand Marnier in favor of orange curacao. That helped lighten it up a tad.
The lemon juice? It’s great. Use lemon juice.
How’s it taste when you put it all together? Awesome. Seriously. You get more rum (duh) notes of vanilla, bananas, cocoa and the Caribbean.
Is it a worthy upgrade to the Sidecar? Of course it is. Now go make yourself a Rum Sidecar and find out for yourself!
